The Persistence of Desire

"Thus Clyde was dismissed into a tainted world where things evaded his focus"
I think this quote is important because it reflects how important our fundamentals are. When Dr. Pennypacker puts the drops in Clyde's eyes, Clyde sees his vision drop drastically. He is then very afraid because everything is getting very obscure quickly. He realizes that people like Janet were even judging him. In the end he realizes that his obscure vision started way before he got the drops in his eyes because he didn’t realize what kind a person Janet was.

“He tucked the note back into his shirt pocket and its stiffness there made a shield for his heart.”
Clyde once dated Janet. He probably got bored and he decided to break up. He probably broke her heart when that happened. Now that they are both married and have separate families, Clyde is although still attracted to her and asks to meet her again. When she gives him the letter, he puts it in his shirt pocket and that letter makes a shield and protects his heart from breaking.
